Will Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership revive or plunge the cooperation between European Union and the United States?

The guests of the first panel session of the 3th of September 2014 were Denis Mac Shane, Marc Allen, James Hansen and Phillip Petersen. The main topic of discussion was going around the current situation of which is undermining the basic principles of peaceful coexistence and economic cooperation in the civilized world. Is the transatlantic cooperation relevant in current situation? Do America and Europe have the same views on it? This questions were raised. Panel discussion was especially interesting as both Europe and America represented.

During that discussion panelists were looking for an answer if the solution for Ukrainian-Russian conflict is possible. In Russian correspondent point of view, Ukrainian authorities have to communicate with nation to solve the problem. On the other hand, journalist from Espreso TV maintains that Russia’s aim is to bring back Soviet Union, but in different form. Representatives of EU Member States underlined that there is lack in communication between conflict parties. There is a need of using current negotiation paths or creating new ones. In some western politicians opinion, Russia got form Europe a permission for aggressive steps which took in Ukraine. Europe allowed Russia to build an emporium, for example because of lack of reaction in front of creating Russian energetic monopoly on European continent. In the summary part of discussion representative of Georgia underlined that Europe made a mistake, because it did not draw conclusions from Georgian-Russian conflict from 2008. The same scenario was used in Ukrainian case.

Youth entrepreneurship in Europe

Presentation of the Report of Technische Universität München / GFK / Amway

  • Prof. Jacek Klich – Krakow University of Economics

Presentation of prof. Jacek Klich was based on Amway Global Entrepeneurship Report 2013. At the beginning guest underlined that it is one of the most important source of scientific information. During research there were a lot of people asked. 26 000 people fom 24 countries took part in that research.

Presentation of results was based on data about Polish tendencies, especially according answers given by young people aged 14-29. Basically, young Poles perceive entrepreneurship as something good. Poland is in the middle of ranking. The most positive are Fines, the most negative attitude describes Americans. It’s pretty surprising tendency because it was said that for business authorities we should look in US.
Youngsters on the edge of career have many threats. Professor underlined that very important in that situation is support from state, environment or even family. As a summary guest used an example of very visible occurrence in Poland, which was also pointed in the Amway report. Young people in Poland are very enthusiastic toward self-employment. However they are dispirited by polish red tape.

Benefit from this discussion could young people, who think about self-employment. Panelists, who are representatives of the strongest enterprises, shared with their private experience. Those, who want to reach success in entrepreneurship, got clues worth to remember.
Main message from Amway, which was represented by Anna Pietrzak, is investment in people, both employees and potential customers. Also, strong point of good company is also product. The only marketing strategy of Amway is product, which assures 100% quality. Honesty is also very important. Client will always realize that he is cheated.
Rafał Bator representing Enterprise Investors shared with rule, which is a guideline for the best. Firstly, it is worth to have some achievement, create or develop something, before the age 30. Not everyone is Bill Gates, therefore it’s good to analyze growth of the best enterprises, also from the inside as employee. After that, having such experience, you can start your own business. What is also crucial, no one should wait too long with bringing his idea to life.

The Post – socialist Transition in Comparative Perspective: The Lessons

Lecture

  • Prof. Leszek Balcerowicz - Chairman of the Council of the Civil Development Forum. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance in three cabinets, former President of the National Bank of Poland.

It is not necessary to introduce prof. Leszek Balcerowicz to participants. During 9th Economic Forum of Young Leaders that important guest gave presentation about economic transformation in Poland during last 25 years.
Prof. Balcerowicz made comparison of capitalism and socialism. Showed that in perspective of time socialism is very costly system and hurts civil interest. In next part of the speech, prof. Balcerowicz presented different paths of leaving socialistic economic reality. Proved that not every post soviet country did it successfully. He pointed main reasons of that phenomenon.
For summary, prof. Balcerowicz comprised post soviet countries from 90s to dying patient. Waiting with treatment (reforms) causes only damage of patient (state).

Drivers of growth in Europe. When do we overcome the recession and youth unemployment?

  • Dimitar Bogov – Governor of the National Bank of Macedonia
  • Tom Bevers - Chairman of the Employment Committee of the European Union (EMCO)

After 5 p.m. participation In the forum led to discussion very interesting for young people. It concerned problem of youth unemployment in Europe and proposals for changes.
Panelists paid attention on inadequate education system in comparison with labor market needs. Commonly agreed that without a doubt experience is more important in the process of job searching than possessed education. Of course, both factors are important, however young person after graduation is worth less for employer when he doesn’t have an experience. Panelists underlined need of lowering costs of recruitment. That could encourage to employ more people and cope with grey market.
Overall, guests stressed importance of activity during process of education and gathering labor skills attractive from the perspective of future employers.

  • Dietmar Stuedemann - (Former Ambassador - Ruhr University Bochum - Germany)

During that panel discussion the most import ant question was about the level on which European integration on the field of common external policy actually is.
One of the points was that Europeans live in very specific situation of deep anti-American moods. Another issue was dedicated to regional cooperation like Visegrad Group or Weimar Triangle and its role in the comparison with common EU policies. In fact, that kind of cooperation sometimes are more effective than agreements among larger number of states.
Panelists also mentioned about the importance of electing Donald Tusk as president of European Council. He will have to join interests of 28 states. However it doesn’t mean that he cannot have his own vision, much different than his predecessors.
Conclusion of that panel can be an assumption made by European diplomats that process of integration for member states is an offer, not obligation.
